As it turns out, if you carry a camera and act like you know what you’re doing, you can go pretty much anywhere at a conference. This time, I wandered in during keynote rehearsals, and got a sneak peek at what attendees were going to see. Windows 7, Office and Visual Studio 2010, and more were on display, including, most disturbingly, Nick Hodge’s Win7 tattoo.

This screencast demonstrates how close we are to implementing a dynamic datacenter with current, released products. It shows how the SML models generated by Visual Studio can be parsed by Powershell, which then uses the information to deploy virtual machines for the required infrastructure out of a template library. The library and placement are managed by System Center. Powershell is also used to deploy the application modules on the virtual infrastructure and configure them.

In summary, you can automate the deployment of an application and its infrastructure without touching a server.
